PROJECT RACHNA

Turning waste into wonders
THREADS OF CHANGE
Project Rachna, an initiative under Enactus Gargi, aims to empower marginalized artisans by providing them with sustainable income opportunities. Focused on crafting and selling handmade products, the project ensures that artisans receive fair compensation while promoting eco-friendly and culturally rich craftsmanship. By preserving indigenous craft techniques and fostering financial independence, Project Rachna plays a vital role in uplifting artisan communities and celebrating traditional artistry.

Environmental Crisis
India accumulates approximately 7,793 kilotons of textile waste annually. About 51% of this total is domestic post-consumer waste. Most of this waste ends up in landfills or is incinerated, releasing greenhouse gases and toxins that harm the environment.

Economic Challenge
Slum communities involved in the informal waste sector (for e.g. Sanjay Colony in Delhi) or low-paying jobs earn meager incomes of less than ₹10,000 per month on average, often lacking access to stable livelihoods for skill development, leaving them trapped in cycles of poverty.

Empowerment opportunity
Despite their potential, marginalized individuals in slum areas lack the skills and resources needed to create value from waste. Project Rachnaaims to empower them to earn sustainable incomes while addressing textile waste, transforming them into active contributors to the economy.
